Sponge filters and hang-on-back (HOB) filters can both support a healthy aquarium. The better fit depends on the fish, tank size, desired flow, and how you want to maintain the filter.
How each filter works
A sponge filter is air-driven and pulls water through foam that catches debris and supports biological media. A HOB filter uses a motor to move water through a media chamber and back into the aquarium.
When a sponge filter fits well
A sponge filter is often useful when gentle flow is important, such as a fry, shrimp, quarantine, or small community setup. It needs an air pump and tubing, and it takes up space inside the tank.
When a HOB filter fits well
A HOB filter keeps its media outside the tank and can make it easier to use several types of media. Check that its flow suits the fish you keep and that its size rating matches the aquarium.
